A Walk Down Memory Lane!

Dear All,

We hope you are well. As some of you may know, the school will celebrate its 50th anniversary as we go into the new academic year. To mark this, we thought it would be a good idea to organise a ‘Walk Down Memory Lane’ which will take place on Saturday, 13th July at 11am. We will open school between 9 and 11am for those of you who would like to have a look around before the walk starts at 11am. This event will be open to all former pupils, members of staff and their families. Present staff and students will of course be welcome to join us as well.

There will be two routes available on the day, one more accessible, and we will send out maps nearer the time outlining these suggested routes.

It would be wonderful to see as many of you as possible and who knows, you may even bump into some familiar faces from the past! To give us an idea of numbers, please use this form to sign up and to let us know you will be coming.

The event is of course free but we would welcome any donations you might care to make to the development of an outdoor classroom space that we are working on. We are hoping that this project could be funded and completed by the end of the new academic year, marking a permanent feature to celebrate this important milestone. Details are attached on how we hope to promote a love of reading by developing this space and if you feel you can help us, you can contribute via our JUST GIVING page. Your support is very much appreciated.

Once again, we hope to see as many of you as possible on the 13th July. Should you have any questions in the meantime, please get in touch via alumni@range.sefton.sch.uk

With very best wishes,

Judy Lowe and Mike McGarry

Formby needed another secondary school as Formby High had around 2000 pupils at the time and so Range High School opened in 1975 with 165 pupils, 10 teaching staff and 5 main support staff.

Graham Leech was appointed as the first Head Teacher of the school and remained in post for 17 years until his retirement in 1992.

Mr Leech built strong foundations for the school, including the introduction of the House System. He named the four houses Blundell, Derby, Sefton and Weld. Derby after Lord Derby and Sefton after the newly named local authority. Due to the Pandemic, we have recently moved to a Year System and now have a Head and an assistant Head of Year from Year 7 through to 11.

The first stage of the school build included 6 classrooms, a dining hall, library and staff room. Further rooms were included in stage two of the build and the school increased in size. There have been a number of additions to the school over the years including a purpose built Sixth Form building and a large building at the back of the school which houses Humanities, RE and English. Almost 50 years after first opening, Range now has around 1300 pupils and approximately 130 teaching and support staff.
