Psychology plays a valuable role in our sixth form curriculum, offering students the opportunity to explore how and why people behave the way they do. We aim to teach A Level Psychology (AQA) in a way that encourages curiosity about the human mind while developing students’ ability to think critically and question evidence. Throughout the course, students learn how to analyse research, assess different explanations for behaviour and build balanced arguments based on scientific findings.
The subject is designed to be engaging and approachable for all students, regardless of their background, and promotes an interest in real-world issues such as mental health, relationships and cognitive processes. By studying Psychology, students not only gain insight into others but also develop a greater awareness of themselves and the society they live in. A Level Psychology supports progression into a wide range of university courses and careers, while also equipping students with transferable skills that are useful far beyond the classroom
We run a number of extra curricular activities throughout Year 12 and 13.
- Year 13 – New York trip – we visit the 9-11 memorial, conduct Research Methods in Central Park, look at cultural bias at Ellis Island and visit SpyScape to enrich our Forensic Psychology topic.
- Year 12 – I’m a Psychologist, Get Me Out of Here, is designed to link students with current research Psychologists online, for them to discuss the research they are working on and ask career related questions
- Year 12 – Liverpool Crown Court trip as part of the Forensic Psychology course
- Year 12 and 13 have the opportunity to conduct brain dissections as part of the Localisation of Function topic
- Both year groups have guest speakers throughout the year in order to enrich their subject specific knowledge.
- Year 12 are able to support Mental Health days – we even get the therapy tortoises in!
